“This is the Americas so this is ‘our’ history that we learned about,” Stearns continued. “Sometimes the study of the Ancient Americas is neglected.”. Stearns has taught at Ocean Shore for 15 years. Her annual sixth grade ancient history productions began her first year of teaching at Ocean Shore. There are five rotating topics: Ancient Egypt, Ancient China, the Seven Wonders of the World, Ancient Greece and the Ancient Americas. This year, sixth grade teacher Jenna Gross (science, language and arts) worked with Stearns. This is Gross’s third year with Ocean Shore. Between the two teachers there are 44 students.

“I have watched the ancient civilization productions from the sidelines for the past two years,” Gross said, (Gross taught eighth grade her first two years at the school.) “It was exciting to be a part of this, to see how much prep work goes into it, and to see firsthand how invested the kids are in this event, They really take ownership.”, This year’s event focused on the Mayans, the Aztecs and the Incas, “There were three plays,” Stearns said, “one on each himate dance shoes civilization, This year students chose to write their own plays and they were all quite good.”..

Along with the plays, students created games and made and decorated booths to reflect their ancient civilization. Visitors traveled the booths and learned many things. For instance, Mayans were one of the earliest cultures to have a zero. Visitors met Atawallpa (c. 1500-1533), the last sovereign Inca emperor before the Spanish conquest. They learned about the Aztec Emperor Moctezuma II (Montezuma) (c. 1466-1520), the ninth Aztec emperor of Mexico. On parent night, “passports” were stamped and parents were gifted with a souvenir as they exited each booth. All souvenirs were created and thought up by the kids.

Under the creative baton of Ocean Shore band director Jerry Downs, sixth graders played music of the ancients. PE teacher Lauren Drygas gave the students an Aztec dance to perform. The event closed with a feast prepared by parents which offered the traditional foods of the ancient cultures. Stearns said there are many lessons for the present and the future that can be pulled from these ancient civilization performances. “Sixth graders are very young when they come to us,” Stearns said. “And this is a make it or break it type of situation and these kids step up. They learn to tolerate each other, work together and listen to each other’s ideas and help each other implement those ideas. They learn to value what the other person has to offer.”.

“Plus they also learn about the mistakes these cultures made,” Stearns continued, “slash and burn farming, clear cutting forests, changing the environment, dirtying up the area they lived in and having to move all the time, not trusting visitors, The history of ancient people is fascinating, I never get tired of it.”, Stearns said she feels very privileged to do these ancient civilization nights, “We are in a community here at himate dance shoes this school which allows this to happen,” Stearns said, “and this type of activity doesn’t happen much in schools anymore, It has to do with money, It has to do with strict adherence to the expected curriculum, I feel very privileged to have the support that I do from my school and from the parents.”..
